WELSH INHAND COMPETITION RESULTS 2010/2011

PUNGA IN-HAND TROPHY

The PUNGA IN-HAND TROPHY presented by Mrs. Robin Collier Punga Stud, is awarded to the winner of the In-hand Competition for most points gained by Registered Welsh Purebred or Partbred in In-hand Competition at any Sire Rating Show designated annually by The Welsh Pony & Cob Society of New Zealand.

343 Purebred and Part bred welshies from up and down the length of New Zealand gained points during the course of the season. Numbers were up from last season, which is encouraging. A Thank You must be made to those who took the time to show their animals and promote the Welsh Breed.

Across the field points ranged from 1 through to 70!

Finishing in third place was the Section A Stallion, Glynmawr Nepta bred, owned and shown by Colleen Boston. He scored 35 points.

In equal runner up spot were the two Welsh Section A’s- Nilloh Gabriella, bred, owned and shown by Pam Hollin and family. The other, Nilloh Howz That owned and shown by Vicki Dalley. They scored 36 points.

The overall winner for this year was the Welsh Section B Stallion – Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man owned and shown by Dawn Elliot. This pony had a super consistent season around the South Island show circuit and scored a huge 70 points. Congratulations to his connections on a great season.

PRISCILLA NEILL TROPHY

The late Priscilla Neill was the first Publicity Officer for this Society she joined the new Society in 1966. At the time she lived at Middlemarch and thru her contacts she was able to compile a history of the Welsh Cobs in New Zealand, she wrote to Cob breeders in the UK to research bloodlines and gain a picture of the Cobs that had been imported here which also helped those wanting to import more she had a particular interest in the importing of Llanina Morning Blaze the Sec D stallion who stood at Sunny Brae Stud with Mary and Leo Brosnahan.

The Society has access to the book where she recorded the photos, letters and newspaper clippings of the time. Priscilla was a prolific writer and researched everything carefully before she published, so her articles are a reliable source of information. She wrote for magazines both here and overseas, about the Society and the Cobs as well as the Sec As and Bs. In Volume one of the Stud Book is a history she wrote of the Society and the first imported Sec A, Sec B and the Cobs.

Along with her research the Priscilla Neil Trophy is a living legacy from her to all dedicated to the Welsh Pony Breed. In 1996 while she was suffering failing health she commissioned a bronze Cob mounted on a wooden stand and presented it to the Society asking Council to award it to award and they thought best. Council considered it should be presented as and when the honour was called for to a living person or pony making an outstanding contribution to the breed and or the Society. This is considered the highest award the Society can bestow upon the recipient.

SERVICE AWARDS

These awards were presented for the first time at the 2011 AGM in Christchurch. They are presented for service to the Welsh Pony & Cob breed in New Zealand. These are a Council Award with one presented to members in each Island. For many years we have had people quietly working away in their areas in which they live, breeding Ponies or Cobs, encouraging new breeders, keeping shows running so others can participate and enjoy the welsh Breed. It was felt that these members should be recognised in form of a certificate.

2011 SERVICE AWARD - NORTH ISLAND Liz Kemp

Liz has bred ponies under the Ngakaroa prefix, Section A and Partbred, with another interest being the Golden Horse I with many Ngakaroa ponies being cream or palomino. Liz imported from Australia, the stallion ALCHERTNGA JONES BOY but due to health reasons has dispersed the stud. Liz’s involvement with the North Island Welsh Pony & Cob show began when she moved to Hamilton. Beginning as a committee member she soon took on the position of treasurer for many years. Liz currently holds the Presidents position. In the early years Liz used to make the ribbons for the show in her car shed, hours of work. With her home in close proximity to the showgrounds Liz has often hosted the judges, picked them up and delivered them to airports, both Hamilton and Auckland. Her contribution to the Welsh Breed and the North Island Welsh Pony & Cob Show was recognised with the 2011 Service Award.

2011 SERVICE AWARD - SOUTH ISLAND Bill & Sharon Carter

Bill & Sharon are the first South Island recipients of the service Award. They have bred Section A and Partbred ponies under the Aintree prefix since 1979. Their senior stallion ARANUI JULIO has had an outstanding career at stud and continues to provide excellent stock for the Aintree Stud and for other breeders. Bill & Sharon have been instrumental in making sure that Welsh classes have remained at shows in the Nelson area. Often the Carter family would be involved in setting up rings, providing catering, organising and hosting judges and making sure everything has been returned at the end of the day. Their contribution was recognised with the 2011 Service Award.
