THE WELSH PONY & COB SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND (INC)
The 55th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Has Been Postponed
The 55th Annual General Meeting of the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of New Zealand has been postponed for six (6) months at this stage.
The Incorporated Societies Office has advised that we postpone our AGM for 6 months and to request a dispensation for our financials, depending on what is happening after that period we could hold an AGM if things have settled or we could hold over until 2021 - this would mean that we would then apply for a further 6 month dispensation.
We have been advised that Incorporated Societies are being very lenient in this environment and as long as we follow our Constitution there will be in repercussions.
Please Note that awards below will go ahead as usual
Priscilla Neill Trophy
Sire Rating

Performance Competition
Val (Registrations Officer) and Zandra (Secretary) all as normal….. processing Registrations, Transfers, DNA, and Memberships etc.
For any queries please contact the President Diane Chesmar or the Secretary Zandra Cook.
Your Council and Officers; Diane, Karen, Dawn, Marlene, Doug, Shaun, Philip, Mandy, Lowri, Sheridan, Jo, Tryphena, Ann, Emily, Hayley, Sandra, Zandra and Val ask that you all keep yourself safe though this difficult time, remember to wash hands frequently, sneeze or cough into the crook of your arm, if you feel unwell stay home away from others and please look after yourself and family first and then your neighbours and friends. Please do not hesitate to phone someone if you need help and/or reassurance - just ask!! Listen to the Official updates (not Facebook) and act accordingly.
During the Spanish Flu of 1918 residents hung tea towels out on their front gates if they needed food etc and it was left at their gate and that worked well, now with the technology we have today, assistance is only phone a call away, times like this are when a Community pulls together,
All the best

Important Notice - DNA Profiling Welsh Purebred Mares.
Since the WPCS of NZ Council introduced Stallion DNA 1st August 2009 the topic of furthering and building the DNA Profile of Registered Welsh Pony & Cobs in NZ has been discussed several times by Council over the years.
The WPCS of NZ Council has a responsibility to encourage the breeding, improvement and protection of all fully registered Purebred and Partbred Welsh Ponies and Cobs. Protection in this instance means to make sure that any Purebred Blood registered whether it is a Purebred or Partbred Pony or Cob that this blood is in fact Purebred blood.
The Members attending the WPCS of NZ AGM 2015 in Timaru directed Council to investigate the feasibility of furthering the DNA Profiling process and bringing in the DNA Profiling of Purebred Welsh Mares.
The decision to DNA purebred mares, as with the decision to DNA Profile Welsh Stallions, how it is implemented and when the project begins is a WPCS of NZ Council decision. All DNA profiling decisions comes under the heading of ‘Regulations’. All Regulations are implemented by Council.
With Wales beginning their Welsh mare DNA Programme from 1st March 2016 this gave Council a lead. At the October 2015 WPCS of NZ Council Meeting it was decided to also begin DNA Profiling of all Welsh Purebred Mares who produce a Welsh Purebred Foal. This will come into effect on the 1st August 2016. The DNA Profiling of the Purebred Mare will be required before their Purebred Foal \can be registered.
The stumbling block seems to be the cost for breeders that have large numbers of mares foaling.
Any breeder can start now, apply for a DNA Kit from the Registrations Officer and put a few of the mares through to spread the load, you can DNA any animal at any time. The 2016 – 2017 Foals only need to be registered before the end of May 2017 when after that a late registration fee applies.
The fee for the DNA Profiling will be $70.00 per animal and a Veterinarian must collect the DNA Sample and fill out and sign the form in the DNA Kit.
The positive for breeders is that they can assure their buyers and future breeders purchasing their stock that what they are purchasing is in fact a purebred animal. Sire and Dam DNA Profiled.
The DNA Regulation for Welsh Purebred mares is… From the 1st August 2016 when a Welsh Purebred mare produces a foal which is eligible for Welsh Purebred Registration, the mare must be DNA Profiled before the foal can be registered with the WPCS of NZ.

50th Annual General Meeting and Celebrations
From Marlene Schroder On Saturday June 6 more than one hundred people gathered at The Ambassador Hotel in Timaru to celebrate the Society’s 50th Annual General Meeting. In 1964 a group of enthusiasts met at the home of David Coxhead (Crick) in Timaru to see if there was enough interest to form a Welsh Pony Society. From there David called the first meeting in 1965 at The White Heron Lodge in Christchurch. Miss V Nicholls (Kuriheka) was elected the first President, Mrs E Deans (Chawton)and Miss R Elliot (Mrs Robin Collier) (Punga) the Vice Presidents. In setting some rules and regulations they had assistance from two Welsh men in the Country at the time who gave the committee some guidelines based on the Society in Wales. One of the Welsh men was David Coxhead’s Uncle Llewellen Richards of the Criban Stud. 50 years later Mrs Robin Collier nee Elliot was honoured by the Welsh Pony & Cob Society with a special letter congratulating her and the Society’s medal for her service to the Society both in here and in Wales which was presented to her by Mr Kevin Townsend at the conclusion of the AGM much to Robins Surprise. Robin had already received an Honorary Life Membership of the New Zealand Society as well as the parent Society in Wales. |

Also at that first meeting was Miss Shirley Mahon (Mrs Shirley Bennett. Glendale), as a youngster she accompanied her father Mr Norman Mahon who was Vice-President of the NZ Pony Breeders Society. Shirley was presented with the Priscilla Neill Trophy and along with Sally Blunt (Hundalee) and Colleen Boston (Glynmawr) was presented with Honorary Life Membership. These three ladies registered ponies in the first Stud Book and have ponies in the latest Stud Book.
Before the Society printed their first Stud Book the Welsh ponies imported into the Country were registered in the NZ Pony Breeders Society register.
The weekend was a good occasion for catching up with people who have been in the Society over the years and not seen so often now it was also for great chance for those interested to learn a bit about the people who have formed the Society and were associated with the early ponies. The dinner on Saturday night was well attended and a running raffle was held thru the evening with donated goods organised by Bev and Jim Hewson. A bus trip to Kuriheka was enjoyed by several people on the Saturday afternoon; they had the opportunity to see inside the stables and the homestead.
On the Sunday a luncheon was held and it turned into a lovely day to reminisce with some of the early breeders and those who had worked at the first Studs to import ponies, Kuriheka, Chawton, Crick, and of course Punga. Thru the two days DVDs ran showing early ponies at home and at Shows as well as some early AGMs where a bit of high jinks took place. The original videos were painstakingly gone thru by Mrs Lynne Cox (nee Moore) and the most salvageable ones were put on DVD for the occasion. I had the pleasure of meeting people and asking them to sign the Visitors Book. A cake was made and iced for the occasion by Mrs Lois Newick and cut by our Honorary Life Members. Robyn Collier, Diana and Robin Bruce, Shirley Bennett, Colleen Boston and Sally Blunt.
A lot of people contributed to the activities for weekend and it was a real celebration of people and ponies with a connection to the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of New Zealand.
